Tree Smart Program

“Right Tree, Right Place”

Urban Corps is proudly partnered with San Diego Gas and Electric to offer a 35 minute educational presentation that teaches elementary students the benefits of trees and the dangers of trees planted in the wrong places.

The presentation will bring awareness to the students to understand why trees are a valuable source to the environment as well as why it is important to plant the right tree in the right place.

What is Tree Smart?

  1. Benefits of Trees: Students will learn how tree are beneficial for us by providing us with things such as oxygen, food and daily resources as well as providing homes to animals.

  2. Power line Tree Safety: Students will understand the dangers of trees planted to power lines and why different size trees should be at various distances away.

  3. Lego Activity: The class will then have their chance to create an Urban Forest city planning activity where they will take what they learned and apply it creating their cities. This hands on activity will help them physically see how conflict can quickly arise when it comes to planning a safe Urban Forest.

  4. Vocabulary: Students will be exposed to the following vocabulary key words: Arborist, Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Photosynthesis, Urban Forest, Electricity, and Power lines. ( Explanations of key words will vary in depth depending age group)
