community justice initiaTIve

a community service program in partnership with the office of San Diego city attorney

Community Justice Initiative is a restorative justice program for young adults designed to help you resolve your case without criminal conviction, while offering you the chance to give back to the community. Urban Corps offers participation in community service work as restitution or “payback” for a minor offense.

YOU MUST BE REFERRED BY THE COURTS TO PARTICIPATE.

Once you complete two (2) community service days (16 hours), you will not have a criminal conviction on your record, you pay no court fines, and you will have given a tangible benefit back to the community.

Once you have accepted the offer, you have 60 days to complete the community service.  Contact Urban Corps immediately to schedule your two days of service. Once complete, you will have earned a dismissal of your case and your sentencing hearing will be taken off the calendar.

The administrative fee is $150 payable to Urban Corps by cash, credit card, or money order at the time of registration. No checks are accepted. The administrative fee is non-refundable. You must be referred to the program. Once referred, please email csc@urbancorps.org to schedule your community service.

Service work may include litter and graffiti removal, collecting recyclables, or environmental work such as tree planting or weed abatement. As often as possible, Urban Corps will assign a service project related to your offense. For example, a graffiti offender may find themselves on a graffiti removal crew.

Young adults ages 18-30 with low-level misdemeanor offenses may participate.

Please wear comfortable clothing, long pants, and closed-toed shoes. Bring a photo ID, water and a sack lunch. We will provide safety gear and issue a coverall uniform and steel-toed boots if needed, depending on the work.

On the days of your scheduled service, please report by 7:00 a.m. to Urban Corps at 3127 Jefferson St., San Diego, CA 92110 (Near the Old Town Trolley Station). We will provide transportation to and from the project site.

You will be assigned to a crew and will be required to follow the direction of the crew supervisor. The use of CELL PHONES, SMOKING and/or use of PROFANITY are strictly forbidden at the work site and could result in you being asked to leave the program.
