Recycling

Recycling

Through a grant from the California Department of Conservation, Division of Recycling, Urban Corps provides recycling services for San Diego County. Over 200 businesses and government offices receive our "niche" industry services. These services fall into four categories:

Special Events

Urban Corps provides recycling services to large entertainment venues such as Coors Amphitheatre and the I Pay One Center at Sports Arena, as well as recycling at community events such as the Adams Avenue Street Fair, San Diego Street Scene, the annual Toy Land Parade, and Bay Keepers Beach Clean Ups.

Collections

We provide collection services to bars, restaurants, corporate and government offices. This much needed service fills a void left by waste haulers who are unable to service these businesses due to lack of volume.

Internships

Urban Corps has partnered with businesses in the hospitality, corporate and business industries to give the young people in our program recycling internships.

The interns provide invaluable assistance in meeting recycling goals—50% of their time is spent on recycling diversion and the remaining spent on industry training. Many of our interns are hired by the hosting sponsor after observing their work performance as interns. Not only does Urban Corps close the recycling loop by diverting materials from these industries but the internship program provides great opportunities for our young adults seeking career positions.

Stadium Services

Urban Corps provide supplemental labor to meet the recycling and litter abatement needs of major venues like Petco Park and Qualcomm Stadium. Urban Corps' Crews collect recyclable material as well as provide minimal janitorial assistance after each event. Without this service most of the recyclable materials would be thrown into the waste stream due to the fact that most of these facilities are focused on cleaning up in a timely manner after each event, regardless of whether or not the material is recyclable. On average Urban Corps diverts over 500 tons of CRV containers from the waste stream every year.
