John Muir Charter School
Urban Corps of San Diego

Educational Vision

Our educational vision is bold and far-reaching, yet practical: develop literate, educated thinkers and achievers who understand their political and social culture; can use mathematics and scientific methods to solve daily problems and contribute to society; and develop positive values.

More than 60% of participants in the Urban Corps program are high-school drop-outs and more than 50% are single parents. The Urban Corps of San Diego is firmly committed to providing an educational program that emphasizes the integration of work-learn and academic education, and maintaining a standard of excellence that places Corpsmembers and their needs at the core of everything it does. Through its partnership with Muir Charter School, Urban Corps provides individuals the opportunity to attain their high school diploma. The high school diploma program integrates work-learn education as well as general academics.

7) Student realizes his/her own special interest, talents, and abilities

Education Program

Each and every Corpsmember must enroll in education one day per week, either at Urban Corps’ onsite school or at community college or trade school.

Our education program offers opportunities for learning about natural resources, conservation, work-learn, employment skills development, and higher education. The classroom uses innovative and creative strategies for helping students reach their goal, including utilizing up-to-date technology. The Urban Corps of San Diego builds and maintains a high quality curriculum that is responsive to the basic educational and career development needs of diverse learners. The Corpsmember development component provides academic and vocational opportunities that enhance job training skills and on-the-job work experiences. Educational development activities are conducted our on-site charter school. Corpsmembers are assisted in obtaining their GED or achieving their high school diploma. The program "curriculum" combines basic academic, practical computer and school-to-work skills.

In addition to the Education Manager, Urban Corps employs 2 California Certified School Teachers, and has partnered with Catholic Charities and Able-Disabled who work one-on-on with students who need extra attention, or who have specific learning needs.
