The Urban Corps of San Diego was chartered in 1989 by the City of San Diego as part of a grass roots movement to provide a solution to the problem of high youth unemployment, and the unfulfilled needs for public lands conservation, and community service.

The Urban Corps offers underserved young people the opportunity to develop themselves, their academic skills, and their marketable job skills. In today’s fast-changing job market, academic competency, technology literacy, interpersonal and leadership skills are essential requirements for young people to attain both their personal and career goals.

Empowering Corpsmembers with these advantages is the real job of the Urban Corps, and after 13 years of serving more young adults than I can imagine, I am grateful to see so many of them employed throughout San Diego County, the Nation, and in some instances, other parts of the world. They have become successful, productive, and responsible young adults, and it gives me great pleasure to see what we’re accomplishing on a daily basis.

My gratitude goes to the many friends, family, donors and sponsors who help in so many ways, as well as the staff and board who make it possible to carry out this vital program. Our Grand Partners, the Civilian Conservation Corps, led the way, and we follow in their footsteps. Without the assistance and support of so many we would never have been able to capture “the magic of human potential”.

With sincere gratitude and appreciation,

Sam Duran
