ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS
The Environmental Projects Department is dedicated to training Corpsmembers to protect and maintain the natural urban ecology in and around San Diego through conservation and preservation.
When assigned to designated sites, Corpsmembers learn the ecological history, natural environment, including native and invasive species of that particular area. Along with conservation work, one of the functions of the environmental projects department is to have UCO crews clean and restore San Diego's waterways that lead to the ocean, clean storm drain channels and restore and enhance the fragile ecosystems of riparian areas, such as the San Diego River.
Through extensive training, hard work, and appreciation of rehabilitating the environment, Corpsmembers learn the value of their efforts on the community and their surroundings. Instruction in the use of power tools, concepts of land management and emergency disaster response training is also part of this program.
