The Urban Corps of San Diego County is a certified local conservation corps and charter school whose mission is to provide young adults with a high school education combined with job training and community service in the fields of conservation and recycling, which will assist youth in becoming more employable while protecting San Diego’s natural resources and instilling the importance of community service.

The need is urgent. Nationwide, 30% of high school students drop out—one every 26 seconds. The number rises to 50% for Latinos and African Americans. Meanwhile, the economy continues to suffer, and with it, gas prices are up, rental rates are high and unemployment hovers at 12% statewide.
Now imagine you’re 18 and you don’t have a high school diploma or any job skills in this economic climate. Perhaps you made a few mistakes – or your parents made the mistakes. You missed, or never received, the opportunity to get your foot in the door and get educated. You need a second chance.
Urban Corps provides second chances to youth who are distressed and at-risk of winding up in jail, on the streets, or never finding a job because they have already been there—like Daniel Villanueva.
“I was going down a horrible road,” said Daniel, who dropped out in 11th grade. “I was hanging out with the wrong crowd and I picked up their bad habits. I decided it was time to get back on track and take advantage of any opportunity I could.”
Fast forward eight months. Daniel graduates from Urban Corps as graduate speaker with a high school diploma, a $10,000 Price Scholarship Award, and plans to earn a business degree in computer technology. He is now enrolled at City College.
